Jung-Jun Ham

Jung-Jun Ham is Principal English Horn of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. He was born into a musical family in Seoul, Korea. He started to learn Oboe at the age of 16. He completed Bachelor’s degree from Chung-Ang University and a Master’s degree from Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg.

Jung-Jun Ham studied Oboe under Paulus van der Merwe (Principal Oboist of NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester Hamburg) and English Horn under Ralph van Daal (Principal English Horn player of Staatsoper Hamburg).

He has been the head of numerous festival orchestras such as Junge Künstler Festival Bayreuth, Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra, International Mahler Orchestra, etc.

He has played under the direction of conductors such as Jonathan Nott, Andrey Boreyko, Manfred Honeck, Christoph Eschenbach, David Afkham and Kurt Masur. He expanded his career as Principal Oboist of the Philharmonie der Nationen in 2011-2012 and was a formal Member of Junge Deutsche Philharmonie in 2011-2013 (Principal Oboe and English Horn).

After completing his studies in Germany, he moved to China in 2014 and became active in the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra for one year. Since 2015, he has been playing English Horn as a member of the SSO and English Horn Faculty of Shanghai Orchestra Academy.
